BIRTH OF
MANTHAN
Manthan was born out of the call for the “Preferential Option for the Poor” by the Society of Jesus in its General Congregation 32 held in 1975. Fr. Philip, an educationist and thinker responded to this call and initiated the work of Manthan in the late 70s. It all began during a village meeting in Jamsaut when he said, “You have a right to safe drinking water” which led to a path that had not been tread before, and there was no looking back.
The Journey of the last four decades helped us to understand the social situation and the lives of people and then make small, big and bigger changes in their lives. Manthan’s efforts to educate poor children through different programs play a vital role to help them to achieve their goals. Manthan has been committed to the poor and their cause with the team dedicated staff.

Over the years, Manthan has mentored the emerging Musahar leadership at the local and state levels through various networks. Intense involvement with these communities, has given Manthan a good grasp of the social, economic, cultural and political deprivation they encounter and their striving for self-identity and assertion.
Manthan has been looked up to for leadership by the poor, other voluntary organisations and the government as well. Through Manthan, many youths from the Maha Dalit communities have completed matric and higher education which is a great achievement for us.
Manthan continues to search for ways to empower the Manjhi communities.
